Happy Apocalypse Day, everyone! I sincerely hope that you all seized the opportunity to exercise your civic duty today and VOTE. We’ve got a great slate of events to get people together, foster great conversations, and build community. We’re particularly stoked to feature the events of two of our members, and pianist/composer George Ko (Tue 11/12) and composer Dr Matt Cook (11/23). And if YOU have something cool coming up and want to play host, let us know so we can feature it in the newsletter! A list of the 5 events for this month, followed by full descriptions: 1) Thu 11/14: ALL-IVY LA FALL SOCIAL 1) THU 11/14: ALL-IVY LA FALL SOCIAL We’ve already got a critical mass of 30 people signed up for this one, so it’s going to be a PARTY. And there will be giant Jenga. Which means you do not want to miss out! Event description from Luma: “Whether you want to make new friends, find a new gig, get a co-founder, find an investor, meet someone special, or just have some great conversations with super-interesting folks, All-Ivy LA Socials are the place to be. Magic happens when a bunch of talented, highly motivated people come together. Recent guests have included: b-school prof, theoretical physicist, venture capitalist, biotech founder, NASA scientist, sustainability expert, entomologist, trauma surgeon, public-health filmmaker, computer vision expert, minesweeper roboticist, and White House economist. In other words, hundreds of seriously legit people like yourself (check out the photo album here). For this event we’ll be gathering at a great restaurant & bar in West LA, with both a large heated outdoor patio and an indoor space. Wear warm layers. We’ll have name tags, conversational prompt cards and games to aid the interactivity.” Non-Ivy guests: You’re welcome to purchase up to one extra ticket for a companion who’s not an alum of one of the listed schools, namely: Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Brown, Penn, MIT, Stanford, Caltech, Oxford, Cambridge, and any doctorate. 2) MON 11/11: ALL-IVY LA GOES TO: Cheaper Than Therapy III: How to Re-train Your Brain and Heal Your Mind with Ali “Victor” Binazir MD (yours truly) “In this session, you will learn 2-3 simple and effective techniques for re-training your brain so you can cultivate qualities like greater focus, inner peace, and resilience. You will then practice these techniques with a partner until you get the hang of them. The goal: to make effective tools of mental health accessible at an affordable cost so you can heal yourself — and to have fun and build community while doing it. I’ll draw from various therapeutic modalities promoting neuroplasticity, e.g. mindfulness, meditation, self-hypnosis, NLP, Havening, EMDR, breathwork, polyvagal theory, creative visulalization, and more. Don’t worry so much about the names; the point is that you’ll finish the session in a better place than where you started.” Use promo code IVY to score a discount. 3) TUE 11/12: ALL-IVY LA GOES TO: Rémy Martin presents: GKO Live in LA Harvard alum George Ko (aka GKO) is a pianist of such extraordinary ability that he is sponsored by Steinway — y’know, the greatest piano makers on the planet. His performances are one-of-a-kind: a mix of well-known classical pieces, his own compositions, and improvisations from audience suggestions. George has been kind enough to create promo code IVYLA just for All-Ivy LA members. This is a public event, not an All-ivy exclusive, so wear some insignia clothing so other All-Ivy LA people can spot you. Or just use the Whatsapp group. Eventbrite description below: “Join Steinway Artist GKO for an unforgettable evening of live, all-improvised piano music that blurs the boundaries of genres and captivates the soul. Experience new original pieces, cinematic masterpieces, and enchanting renditions of Studio Ghibli classics — all brought to life on a Steinway grand piano!” 4) Sat 11/16 12p-12a ALL-IVY LA GOES TO: NOON TO MIDNIGHT at Walt Disney Concert Hall This is the LA Phil’s all-day new music fest, and it is awesome. Tix are $12. It will be a huge event, so we’ll use the Whatsapp group to find one another. Join us for the launch of the symphonic album Braveship by our very own composer/author Dr Matt Cook (Stanford 2011, UPenn 2016). Braveship is a musical story about a young orphan boy who discovers a magic airship and flies it to faraway lands, discovering the family he never had along the way. Meet composer Matt Cook, and the album’s pianist, Dr. Eva Schaumkell, in an afternoon with live music and refreshments and a signing of the collector’s album. Braveship was recorded at Disney’s Skywalker Sound by a GRAMMY-winning production team. A truly international project, the collector’s album features contributions from over 150 virtuosos and artists from 20+ countries. No charge and no RSVP necessary. Refreshments will be served. That’s all for now! Looking forward to catching up with you at one of these events soon. All the best, |
